Big News! Big Steel! Big Coffee!

Finally, some BIG progress!

I know this may just be a "guy thing," but Pierre and I are totally psyched that the steel for the new Mill Village has arrived. There is nothing quite as awe-inspiring (well, I can think of a few other things!) than a big rig pulling onto the site with literally tons of beams and girders.

In just one day, a small crew was able to set a lot of girders.

This signals a big step forward in bringing Duck Soup back to reality, and a phase of very visible construction. O.K., O.K., it also gives us something to do when the afternoons begin to drag on…that is, if I can tear Pierre away from the new iMac in the office. Blueberry blue, with matching printer. We’re cool.

Westerly view from the lower L of the new building where foundation pouring continues.

Progress as of July 6 -- Steel framing starts to go up over the hole!

Back to the steel: The infrastructure is rising very quickly. And, over the next few weeks, the framework of the new center should be complete. This will give everyone something to look at other than a big hole in the ground. It will also give us all a more visual picture of where the building will be, and how it really will be laid out.

Big crane needed to lift BIG STEEL.

I am told that the steel will be put into place very quickly, maybe even in as few as three days. Hard to believe. Then the slow process of all the detail work will begin, and it may seem like weeks before anything else happens. That will be difficult for Pierre and me, as we are getting very antsy to open Duck Soup again. We know that these things take time, and we need to learn to be patient. Hell, we’re too old to learn patience…put up the building NOW!

Also new this week: Coffee, Coffee, Coffee.

Because of the increase in orders, and customer response to our upcoming online CoffeeHouse, we are moving up our time line considerably! We appreciate your desire for fine Java, and are happy to bring it to you sooner than planned. Very soon, you will be able to order your favorite Duck Soup coffees online, and can either pick up your order at our luxurious temporary headquarters (free chat is included in the price!) or have it shipped directly to you. One promise that I will make right here is that, even though this is the electronic age, you will still get the fine Duck Soup quality and the unsurpassed Duck Soup customer service that we have always delivered. What you won’t get is a bunch of coffee babble…pretentious terminology…or confusing descriptions.

The bottom line for us is "Do you like the coffee?"…"Does it make a good cuppa Joe?" I personally don’t care how high up the mountain the beans grow, if the coffee is young, if it’s a bit winey, has hints of wild herbs and berries, or if it’s precocious enough to go to Harvard.

What is important to us is a "yes" answer to this one question: "Would you like some more?" Our customers have told us for 27 years that they just want a good cup of coffee. Seems pretty straightforward to us…

What you will see on the site is a listing of our traditionally wonderful coffees (and we will include brief descriptions…very brief), and an order form. Pretty simple…user friendly…easy to navigate. That simplicity is important to us because we don’t want you to get lost, or suffer from caffeine withdrawals! Heavens no! And we know we are not going to impress you with lots of coffee speak and layers of fluff through which you need to dig. Find it. Order it. Get it. Brew it. Enjoy it. You can add that to your Duck Soup philosophy files…

So stay tuned for more news about our online CoffeeHouse, and enjoy watching all that steel go up.

Be well,
Richard

P.S. I hope you enjoy reading these updates as much as I enjoy writing them. It is nice to have the chance to share what is going on, and the progress we are making, something that is near impossible to do when the store is open, and I’m waiting on customers. Thanks for putting up with my ramblings
