A part of the community...

Whether you work or live in a neighborhood, you eventually become part of that neighborhood. You understand it, interact with it, adopt it as your own. As your outreach grows, this becomes part of your community, your family. You learn to laugh with it, cry with it. It breathes, you breathe. It hurts, you hurt.

We have always made it a part of our business to invest in our community. Certainly not out of obligation, but because we wanted to. It is important to us to be a part of the community family, to honor it and support it through thick and thin. Dividends? You bet...

Immediately after the January 2 fire that consumed the 189-year old Mill Village, the community's response was positively overwhelming. There were a lot of people involved in the history of Mill Village...and they were as distraught as we were. People were stopping by to offer their condolences, hugs and pats on the back, even money. It really hit home that indeed our community stood behind us even as it was in the middle of the holiday season, and we tended to take such things for granted.

And this didn't just happen for the week or two following the fire, and then die out. It has kept going now for almost five months. Pretty amazing, and we at Duck Soup are honored by our community's support.

Perhaps most touching of all came just recently. At the end of March, we (and all of the Mill Village tenants) were presented with “We Care Baskets” donated by the Sudbury Elementary Schools... each and every child participated.

The card read simply, “The Sudbury elementary school children and parents have prepared these gift baskets to let you know what we are thinking of you. We have always appreciated the generosity of the owners and employees of Mill Village Shops. This is our way of saying `Thank You'.”

Wow. Pretty cool. It is this continuous outpouring that is allowing us to return to our original commitment.
