Crunch Time Has Arrived...

"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things..."

Well, Duck Fans...we are right down to it. It is Crunch Time, time to open the New Millennium Duck Soup. Shall we dare set a date? You betcha:

0002/22/2000

You can read that as February 22, 2000! We have put a stake in the ground, and we will beready for you...

GOODS GOING UP! We're starting to put items on the shelves in preparation for our Feb. 22 opening. See you then!

I know that it has taken a while to get to this point, and many of you have, I know, been wondering aloud, "What is taking you guys so long?" This is a very valid question, and one that I feel needs to be addressed.

Without being flip (and those of you who know Pierre and I will attest to this) the past 13 months have been an unusual hell. Midway through the summer, we thought that all was a piece of cake for a fall opening. But with construction delays, insurance waltzes to conduct and such, we came up with a mouthful of duck feathers. And then, combine that with:

  • 10,000 product SKU's
  • More than 500 vendors
  • Delayed installation on our new fangled phone system
  • Town and State approvals
  • And a very high end build out...

What do you get? A bit of a delay. We apologize for getting your expectations ahead of our reality, but I am very pleased to say we are ready!

TAKING SHAPE! There's still a lot of shelf loading to do, and only two weeks or so left to open!

As promised, our reopening will be relatively soft. What does that mean? Well, the doors will be open...and the lights will be on...and the Ducks will be out in full force. Quite a bit of product has already arrived (ah, that is a story unto itself...) and is being processed in the basement to be displayed on the floor upstairs. But by no means will we be the chock-a-block floor-to-ceiling Duck that we were a year ago. That will take some time...and as orders come in, we will get that product to you ASAP. But we are ready to rock and roll...and we know you are as well.

Indeed, for our opening in a few weeks, you will have a FULL selection of:

  • Bread
  • Cheese
  • Coffee (Wish I could get more of that lovely Venezuelan roast that PeterBread just brought us from Caracas...!)

THERE'S THE CHECKOUT COUNTER! Looking through the store to Rte. 20 you can see the coffee grinders, the registers, the cheese case and some of the dry goods on the shelves. Nice new scale too!

FROM BEHIND THE CHEESE CASE! Looking toward Rte. 20.

In addition, quite a bit of our tea, housewares and accessories are already in. We are pleased to have some of our favorite suppliers with us from the outset as well: Pain D'Avignon breads, Harbor Sweets...and those lovely cookies from Pelican Baking Company.

THAT'S ME! There's my new coffee bin ready to rock!

It is with a great sigh of relief that we have set a date...and trust that all of the final pieces will fall neatly into place. We may ask you to step around a box or two...we hope you don't mind.
Our Ducks are excited as well. It has been a long time coming...and we are all chomping at the beak. I am still searching for a few good Ducks as well...flex-time and full time. We are good to go right now, but hey, we always know that there is always room for a Few Good Ducks. If you are interested...or know of someone who is, have them swing by the store and chat me up. The more the merrier...and we know that with your unparalleled support, business will be booming once again.

So, hey...that's it. It's back to work for me...and lots to do before 0002/22/2000. Hmmm. Maybe this is the REAL millennium!

Be well,
Richard
